Manganese is an essential element in the manufacturing process of various products. It is used to improve the toughness and durability of steel, aluminum, copper, and plastic. In recent years, its importance as a raw material for industrial production has grown steadily, making it one of the most sought-after commodities in the world. As a result, the demand for manganese is higher than ever before, and manufacturers and consumers alike are increasingly aware of the production output of countries that specialize in manganese mining.
The top 10 manganese-producing countries are located in several parts of the world and are reaping the benefits of abundant manganese supplies. According to data compiled by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the countries listed below are currently the leading producers of manganese, with South Africa leading the way.
South Africa was the largest producer of manganese in 2023, followed by China, Australia, and Gabon. South Africa’s manganese production was estimated to be 3.95 million MT, accounting for almost 40% of the global total. In comparison, China’s production was estimated to be 3.42 million MT, representing about a third of the total global manganese production. Australia and Gabon followed in third and fourth place with 2.67 and 2.33 million MT respectively.
Other leading producers of manganese in 2023 included Brazil, India, Ukraine, and Malaysia. Brazil was the fifth-largest producer of manganese with 1.41 million MT, followed closely by India, Ukraine, and Malaysia. India’s production was estimated at 1.11 million MT, while Ukraine and Malaysia mined 857,000 MT and 782,000 MT respectively. Kazakhstan, substance, and Russia rounded up the top-10. Collectively, these 10 countries accounted for roughly 85% of the global manganese production in the year 2023.
Recent data from the World Steel Association showed an increase of 4.1 million MT in global manganese production between December 2023 and February 2023. South Africa, the world’s largest manganese producer, increased its production by 85,000 MT in the same period, a sign of its continuous and dedicated commitment to the global manganese trade.
The increasing use of manganese in various industries, fueled by the rising demand for durable products, makes manganese and its leading producers highly sought after in the commodities market. It is expected that in the near future, the production of manganese in global regions will continue to grow as manufacturers rely on the metal for various production processes.
