In the modern social media age, it is no surprise that President Trump’s followers have taken his lead in expressing their views via vulgarities, insults and baseless attacks. Presidential rhetoric has become increasingly aggressive over the last several years, and President Trump’s supporters have adopted that same rhetoric in their posts and comments online.
In a survey conducted by the media analysis group, Media Matters, they found that Trump supporters are promoting numerous false and misleading statements about those who oppose the president. Many of them have even gone as far as to make personal attacks and vulgar language in their postings, a clear violation of social media terms of use.
These attacks are not just online either. In multiple instances, President Trump supporters have of physical violence against protesters at rallies. This has made it even more dangerous for those who are simply trying to gather their thoughts and voice their opinions online without fear of being attacked.
It is especially concerning when this kind of discourse is the norm in the political discussion, as it creates an atmosphere of animosity and hatred. This kind of behavior sets a bad precedent, and it can quickly become the language and definition of the political debate.
The effectiveness of such tactics is questionable. It is unlikely that this kind of language will lead to a more informed or productive dialogue. In fact, it could have just the opposite effect, as it may serve to drive people away from participating in any kind of political discussion or debate as they fear for their safety and peace of mind.
While it is certainly true that individuals have the right to express their opinions, they must always do so in a respectful manner. Insults, vulgarities and baseless attacks are never an appropriate way to engage in political discourse or have productive conversations. This kind of language should be discouraged and not acceptable in any political forum. It is important to remember that the political discussion should remain civil and respectful.
