Univision Anchor Jorge Ramos Rebukes Network for Not Challenging Trump
The renowned journalist and Univision anchor Jorge Ramos has taken issue with his own network for not taking a more active stance in challenging President Donald Trump’s policies and rhetoric.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Ramos said, “It is difficult to challenge the president of the United States, without actually challenging him…But what Univision has not done, and what it should have done, is to criticize the president’s words and try to influence public opinion. That has been lacking during the Trump administration.”
Ramos went on to mention how Univision has increased its coverage of Trump’s policies since he took office. He pointed out that the network had reported extensively on the now-infamous Zero Tolerance policy, where immigration officials were separating children from their families attempting to cross the border.
However, during the same interview Ramos lamented how the network had erred by not extending the coverage to the effects of the various migrant detention centers. He remarked, “We have dedicated a lot of time to immigration, but we have not done enough to explain the situation in the shelters. We have not reported on the possibility that these immigrant children may never be reunited with their parents, or the fact that there are many adolescents in the shelters who, in addition to the trauma of being separated from their families, are being sexually assaulted.”
In his daily newscast, Ramos has taken to often criticizing Trump in an effort to hold him accountable and let the public know of the detrimental effects of his policies. He stated, “I have an obligation to confront the person at the highest level in power… When I do that, I’m fulfilling my role as a journalist. But I also do it because I expect others to do the same.”
In a time where the division in the media landscape is becoming increasingly clear, it’s admirable to see a reporter of Ramos’ stature call out his own network for not taking a stronger stance and doing more to oppose the policies of a controversial president. Only time will tell if Univision will opt to take Ramos’ advice and become better at reporting on the actual effects of the Trump administration.
