According to a new poll released by the University of Maryland this week, one quarter of Americans believe that the FBI was involved in instigating the chaotic events of the January 6th Capitol Hill riot.
The shocking poll, conducted by the Center for American Politics and Citizenship at UMD, found that out of 1,003 Americans surveyed, only 59 percent believed that the FBI had no involvement in the Capitol Hill riot. Additionally, the poll found that out of that 59 percent, two-thirds of Republicans and a third of Democrats believe the FBI did have a role in the insurrection.
The poll also found that becomes a person’s partisanship grows more extreme, the likelihood of them believing that the FBI had something to do with instigating the event increases drastically.
Specifically, 59 percent of Democrats who identified as ‘strongly liberal’ believed the FBI had a role in the riot, while 62 percent of Republicans who identified as ‘strongly conservative’ said the same.
The poll also asked respondents to gauge whether they believe the FBI was fully prepared for the Capitol Hill riot and the results were divided: about half of the respondents said that the FBI were not fully prepared, while the other half said that they were.
Most of those who said the FBI was not prepared blamed President Donald Trump for not responding quickly enough to the events of that day.
The poll found that 57 percent of the respondents said they were ‘very concerned’ about Capitol Hill security moving forward, with a majority of them skeptical of the FBI’s ability to prevent a similar event from occurring in the future.
Many were concerned that the FBI had failed at their task of providing sufficient security on that fateful day, a criticism that has been widely echoed in both the media and by politicians.
The poll results reveal the American public’s broad skepticism towards the FBI’s role in the Capitol Hill riot and the subsequent security risks facing the country.
Though the official purpose of the Capitol Hill riot has yet to be determined, it is clear that Americans are taking the events of that day and the possibility of future similar events very seriously.
It remains to be seen what steps the government will take to ensure the safety of all Americans and to restore public faith in the FBI.
