The United States is facing a monumental power shift following the announcement of California’s replacement of Senator Dianne Feinstein with Laphonza Butler.
Butler has had a long career in activism and stands as a tremendous advocate for working people in a state that is dominated by business interests. She has worked to enhance the rights of working people for over twenty years, including her role as President of SEIU California/ULTCW. Having transitioned from the labor movement to the halls of government, Laphonza Butler is finally being presented with a chance to make her voice heard for the people of California at the highest level, and all eyes are on her as a potential leader post-Feinstein.
Butler is no stranger to Capitol Hill, having served for over ten years as Chief of Staff of the United States Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP) for Senator Harkin. In this role, she has had the opportunity to gain experience with the complicated policy issues that affect working people. From there, she moved on to serve as a policy leader for two consulting advisory firms, providing advice to unions, foundations, and other organizations who are advocating for social justice and working people.
Most recently, Laphonza Butler was tapped by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve as Secretary of the State Senate Rules and Jurisprudence Committees. In this position she has been able to play an instrumental role in implementing progressive policy initiatives that will shape the future of California labor laws.
Now, with her appointment to US Senator for the State of California, Laphonza Butler is presented with a unique opportunity to bring her firsthand knowledge of labor issues to Washington, DC. Her experience in labor and government circles will be a valuable asset as she looks to establish justice for working people throughout the United States. It is clear that Butler’s commitment to social justice and her background in labor advocacy will bring a perspective that has been largely left out of our political discourse for too long.
All eyes are now on Laphonza Butler as she transitions from her position in California to the United States Senate. During her time in office, she promises to be a forward-thinking leader who will fight for working people of all backgrounds throughout the country.
