Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, is facing a new reality in life as of this week. On Tuesday, his wife Rosalynn passed away, after seventy-three years of marriage. Few couples in history have shared such a long bond, and the sombre news likely brings President Carter deep sorrow.
The couple married in 1946, during the close of the Second World War. At the time, Rosalynn worked in nursing while Jimmy Carter was still studying at the U.S. Naval Academy. It was Rosalynn who encouraged Carter to pursue a career in politics, and she stood by him during his campaigns and his eventual term as U.S. President.
It is no secret that President Carter and Rosalynn enjoyed a close partnership. They were often seen together, especially in the President’s hometown of Plains, Georgia. In 2005, they decided to observe their 60th anniversary in humble style—they made dinner for their close family at home.
Rosalynn’s passing will likely leave an immense and empty space in the Carter family. In 2018, she was diagnosed with a condition that affects the brain’s ability to discharge certain natural hormones. The family maintained hope for her recovery, but it became clear this week that the end of her life had come. Even so, the support system within the Carter family and their long-time friends is solid as lives look ahead.
It is clear that the entire nation has great respect for the Carters’ long-standing relationship. President Carter often credited his wife Rosalynn with his successes, and he has thanked her numerous times for her unwavering support throughout life. His words of appreciation, among other things, will be remembered with fondness, for the inspiring couple has left an incredible mark on U.S. history.
This latest tragedy brings a new season for the Carter family. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. May Rosalynn Carter rest in peace.
