The Pro DeSantis Super PAC, an independent expenditure committee dedicated to supporting the candidacy of Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, is facing a major shake up after its CEO resigned amidst rising tensions.
The decision by chief executive and CEO, Laura Mahaffey, was announced in a statement released by the group, citing personal reasons for her resignation. Mahaffey had been with the organization for the past year, taking up her post in February 2020 and leaving her position as of April 2021.
The PAC has come under increased scrutiny since Mahaffey was chosen as its leader, largely due to her lack of political experience and her ties to the DeSantis family. Additionally, many of the PAC’s activities have been questioned for their lack of transparency and potential conflicts of interest. This latest development, the resignation of its CEO, is only adding fuel to the fire.
The statement released by the PAC showed appreciation for Mahaffey’s work during her tenure, noting that her “professionalism and service to the PAC will be greatly missed”. No details as yet have been released surrounding her replacement, nor has the PAC issued any statements on the matter since the resignation announcement.
It remains to be seen if the departure of Mahaffey will lead to a shift in the PAC’s strategy, or if strategic and organizational changes will be made as a result. Either way, the situation is certainly causing tension within the DeSantis camp and the Republican party machinery alike. The fact that Pro DeSantis Super PAC’s CEO has resigned amidst rising tensions will likely be a talking point throughout the upcoming 2022 midterm elections.
