Donald Trump’s lawyers have sent a letter to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) requesting an investigation into the handling of 2020 election fraud claims.
The letter was sent on Wednesday, February 24, and signed by attorney Alex Spiro, on behalf of attorneys Rudolph Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, and David Jensen. The letter states that the DOJ, the FBI, and other federal agencies should conduct an “immediate and fair investigation” into the integrity of the 2020 election process.
This is not the first time that the Trump legal team has sought to probe the election results, as Giuliani has previously tried to challenge the results in multiple states in court. While many of these challenges failed, the letter signals that Trump and his allies remain steadfast in their belief that there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
While the letter did not specifically present any evidence of fraud, it did state that the DOJ should review some of the claims that have been circulating for months, including illegal voting by non-citizens, the alleged use of Dominion Voting Systems machines to manipulate vote counts, and the purging of voter roles in several states.
The letter also noted that the DOJ should consider additional questions, such as whether or not crucial evidence was destroyed or withheld, whether there was any manipulation of ballots by government employees, and whether any foreign interference had taken place.
Though Trump and his team have suffered numerous legal set-backs since the election, this letter is another example of their ongoing determination to challenge the results. While it’s unclear what the DOJ will decide to do in response to the letter, it’s certain that the debate about the 2020 election will remain a controversial topic for some time.
