Ghana is making strides in its ambition to become a leading supplier of lithium and other battery materials, by taking the initiative to develop its first-ever lithium mine. Atlantic Lithium, a mining and exploration company, is leading the endeavours by spearheading the project in the Western Region of Ghana.
The project, which is expected to get underway by 2021, is projected to have a lifespan of 25 years. This period also requires the company to make appropriate investments in the surrounding community.
The project has the potential to become a major economic contributor to Ghana after completion. It is projected to produce 3,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate or hydroxide concentrate in the first ten years of operation. This would make Ghana the leader of lithium production in Africa.
At present, the project is estimated to have an investment of up to $500 million, an amount that will enable Atlantic Lithium to construct the mines, build a lithium plant, and develop a secure transmission line for the use of electricity.
The project is likely to have a positive impact on Ghana’s economy as it is expected to generate well-paying jobs, and also attract international investments and technological advances. Moreover, it will enable Ghana to capitalise on their reserves of high grade ore, which is estimated to be valued at over $2 billion.
In addition to the projected economic growth, the project is also expected to have certain environmental benefits. For instance, the lithium concentrates that will be produced from the mines will be processed using technologically advanced methods that will reduce both air and water pollution. Furthermore, a portion of the profits generated from the project will be invested in developing renewable energy solutions to further reduce emissions.
These investments will compliment Ghana’s ongoing efforts to become one of the most sustainable markets in the African continent.
Overall, the project initiated by Atlantic Lithium is expected to have a lasting positive impact on the entire nation. This project constitutes a major step in Ghana’s journey to becoming a major supplier of lithium and other battery materials.
