Rudy Giuliani, the personal attorney of former President Donald Trump, was just ordered by a judge to pay a $148 million judgment against him for civil racketeering and defamation claims by a voting machine company called Smartmatic. The ruling was issued by United States District Court Judge Ursula Ungaro and states that Giuliani must pay the judgment immediately. Furthermore, the judge dismissed Giuliani’s motion to amend his answer and counterclaims against the plaintiff.
Smartmatic filed suit against Giuliani back in 2021 for defamation and civil racketeering violations. According to the complaint, Giuliani engaged in a campaign to spread false allegations of fraud and voter manipulation in the 2020 Presidential Election. As Smartmatic noted, the claims were completely untrue and resulted in substantial damage to the company’s reputation and business.
In his motion to the court, Giuliani attempted to use several defenses, including arguing the Smartmatic’s claims were time-barred. The judge, however, saw through Giuliani’s arguments and the court ruled against him. Judge Ungaro noted that the complaint “contained allegations of a criminal scheme devised and orchestrated by Mr. Giuliani that rests squarely with the provisions of [the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act].”
The suit’s conclusion is yet another black mark on Giuliani’s legal legacy. Smartmatic is now expected to seek ways to collect the full $148 million from the former New York City Mayor, including trying to enforce the judgment overseas. The long saga appears to finally be over, except, unless another legal twist lies ahead.
