UAW Membership Approves Historic 4½ Year Contract With Detroit’s Big Three
Auto workers in Detroit have ratified the historic 4½ year contract between the United Auto Workers (UAW) and Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler, an agreement that signify the first major labor agreement between the union and the companies in years.
The agreement, reached after ten months of negotiations, came on the heels of the UAW’s strike against GM in September of last year. The 4½-year deal, which has been described as the “richest” contract in the union’s history, will provide some much needed financial stability for the Big Three automakers, as well as significant pay raises and other benefits for the UAW members.
“This agreement is an historic victory and example of solidarity that honors the traditions of the UAW-Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler,” said UAW President Gary Jones in an official statement.
Under the contract, workers will receive pay increases, lump-sum bonuses and profit-sharing payments over the life of the agreement. UAW members will also enjoy annual salary increases and improved workplace conditions. Additionally, new provisions to improve job security, increase employment in American factories and protect the UAW members from outsourcing will be part of the agreement.
The new contract also gives the UAW greater access to training for its members and an improved health care plan. Moreover, the UAW will also have an opportunity to purchase a portion of the company’s shares. This will help the union be more involved in the decision-making process and better ensure that the automakers keep its promise of job security and workplace improvements.
“We are proud to have reached a deal that delivers on this promise and positions our members in success,” said Ronnie King, the UAW’s vice president of the GM Department.
The approval of the new 4½ year contract signals the beginning of a new era between the UAW and the Detroit automakers. This agreement provides stability for the union members and for the automakers, and will help both sides reach a strong and lasting partnership.
