Johnathan Jemison of Jacksonville, Florida, has been charged with stealing over $22 million from the Jacksonville Jaguars, the city’s National Football League (NFL) franchise. The US Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida alleges that Jemison, an ex-employee of the team, had been using company funds to fund a luxurious shopping spree for himself. In addition to stealing funds from the franchise, investigators believe that he had used the stolen money to purchase a private jet, expensive jewelry, and a $6 million waterfront mansion in Florida.
Jemison had been the Jaguars’ controller since 2015, a position which allowed him direct access to the team’s bank accounts. The Jacksonville’s US attorney’s office claims that Jemison created fake companies over a six-year period and issued checks from the Jaguars bank account to these companies. He then used the proceeds from those checks to purchase luxury goods for himself.
The US attorney’s office alleges that Jemison had successfully managed to hide the illicit activities since 2015 by taking advantage of several discrepancies in the team’s internal financial control systems. According to a report from the FBI, the suspect had created false invoices from fake vendors, created fake tax filings, and obscured the massive transactions so they wouldn’t be detected.
The Jaguars’ owner Shad Khan expressed outrage at the news. “We have the deepest respect for our local and federal law enforcement professionals and appreciate their diligent work to bring to justice an individual who defrauded the organization of substantial financial resources,” Khan said in a statement.
Jemison faces a range of charges related to wire fraud and money laundering, with each count carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Authorities are still investigating the case and additional charges may be brought against the suspect.
In a statement, the Jaguars said that they are working closely with federal authorities and have instituted additional checks and balances to make sure that such occurrences do not happen in the future. They added that the team is taking all possible actions to recoup the stolen funds, including filing a civil lawsuit against Jemison to recover the money.
In a climate when financial fraud has been on the rise, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of financial oversight and regular accounting practices. However, it also shows the lengths criminals will go to line their own pockets with other people’s hard earned money.
