The United States has just made an unpredictable move, banning the import of certain Apple Watches that could potentially infringe on patented pulse readers.
Apple Watch Series 4, 5 and 6 feature technology that is similar to that of a patented pulse reader. The patented design requires an additional component to accurately read a user’s internal pulse. Without this component, the device is deemed unauthorized and could be infringing on the patent.
The American company, the owner of the patent, has stepped forward to file a complaint. This prompted the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to move forward with the ban, preventing the shipping of these watches through the Los Angeles and New York ports.
Although the decision has caused some confusion, it’s being seen as a win for the American firm, which filed the complaint. The ITC plans to investigate the matter before deciding what happens next – whether the ban is permanent or just a temporary measure.
The Apple Watches still available on the Apple website for purchase are of the Series 3 or lower, making sure to steer clear of the prohibited models. The products remain unaffected in different countries around the world, with only the US currently bearing the ban.
Apple lovers need not despair, though; the tech giant is set to launch its new watch series this fall, making sure to create technology that won’t violate the patent. As for now, the scene is uncertain as to when the ban will lift and the authorized models become available in the US.
