Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping companies, has announced that they are halting all shipments in the Red Sea until further notice after a Houthi militant attack on one of their cargo vessels.
The attack occurred Wednesday afternoon when Maersk container vessel, ”M/V Torm Lissu”, was struck by two missiles while navigating through the Red Sea. No casualties were reported, and the crew members have all been evacuated to the safety of a nearby port.
Maersk has responded to the attack by suspending all shipments and vessel operations in the region until they can receive confirmation that it is safe to resume operations. This comes after long tensions between the Houthi militia and global shipping containers, which have increased in recent months due to a combination of piracy, armed conflicts, and other security threats.
Due to the volatile security situation in the Red Sea, many of the world’s leading shipping companies have followed suit by declaring a shutdown in the region. These include COSCO, Evergreen, and CMA CGM, among other transporters.
Although the attack caused some damages to the M/V Torm Lissu, no significant loss was reported. This is mainly due to the fact that the ship was carrying no cargo, as it was on its way to unload some in the nearby port.
The attack on the M/V Torm Lissu has sparked new concerns about global trade and commerce in this part of the world. Maersk and other transporters hope to gain better understanding of the current situation before making any more decisions regarding shipments in the Red Sea. It is yet to be seen how long the current shutdown in the region will last, and what measures will be taken in order to improve security.
