Tesla has recently issued a recall for more than 120,000 of its vehicles due to a safety concern. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects Tesla Model X vehicles produced between September 2015 and August 2016.
The NHTSA identified a potential flaw in these vehicles’ power liftgate braces — the brace connects the power liftgate to the SUV frame — that could lead to increased force on the latch during a crash. If the latch gives way, the vehicle’s right rear door may open unexpectedly.
Tesla is aware of the issue and has proactively issued the recall to replace the faulty braces in all affected vehicles. The company said owners of the vehicles will be contacted when parts become available for repair.
The automaker has received reports from customers saying the rear right door of their vehicles would not stay closed. However, no injuries or crashes have been reported due to this issue.
Being pro-active in the recall is commendable, as the safety of its customers is of utmost importance for Tesla. The company is asking its customers to reach out to their local service center with any questions and that it will cover the cost of repairs.
Tesla has been making headlines lately with the successful launch of its new Model 3 sedan and the company’s progress towards creating a fully autonomous vehicle. It is reassuring to know that safety still remains paramount as the company strives for innovation.
Safety standards are constantly evolving and while this recall is an inconvenience, it is a necessary step to help ensure the safety of all drivers and passengers in Tesla vehicles.
